My Recipe For A Lean, Fit, Happy, Healthy Life

health-happy

I recently received an email from a client asking what I recommend most for staying lean and fit. I posted the answer on my Facebook page 'Health Coach Penny', and got more 'likes' than any other post, so I thought you might like to take a look at my recipe for staying lean, fit, happy and healthy. 1) It starts with sleep. I need at least 8 hours, yours may be a little less or a little more.  Read to learn why sleep is so important.  2) Eat veggies, fish, meat, fowl, eggs, nuts and seeds, and a little fruit (mostly berries). That's it. You can't exercise off the weight. If you believe in the 'burn off the calories with exercise to lose weight' theory then you will have to run 35 miles (approx. 100 calories burned per mile) to burn 1 pound of fat!! If you do try to exercise like this to lose weight you end up hungry (and probably injured due to overuse), and will usually make up for the small amount of calories you burned by eating more than you would have if you hadn't done chronic cardio (not to mention the muscle tissue that is degraded due to excessive cardio).  Remember the most important fact: 80% of your body composition is DETERMINED BY WHAT YOU EAT--not by exercising! 3) 2-3 weight training workouts each week. This can be done in the gym, at home with minimal equipment, or with body weight exercises. Exercise activates the muscle tissue, which in turn keeps all of your organ systems functioning at their optimum capacity because the organs are supporting … [Read more...]

Paleo Goes Mainstream

paleo-primal-food-pyramid-mark-sisson-marksdailyapple

Just as I embark on my nutrition seminar tour for Mark Sisson the Primal/Paleo/Ancestral movement comes out of the shadows and hits center stage.  The recent press it received on Dr. Oz catapulted the ancestral health "craze" into mainstream popularity.  The only problem I have with all of this attention is that it isn't a "craze" or a fad diet.  It is the way we are genetically designed to eat, and have been eating for the past few million years, until the advent of agriculture which occurred about 10,000 years ago.  Click here to learn how in 2007 I embarked on my journey and watched my health improve while eating according my genetic blueprint.  I don't consider myself a 'Paleo Nazi', and most people don't have to follow it absolutely to the letter to see dramatic positive health changes, but I don't venture too far from my hunter gatherer roots.  I enjoy all things modern, but when it comes to nutrition I believe it is important to stay as close to an archeologically historical, scientifically proven, diet as possible. We were stronger, taller, healthier, had bigger brains and less dental decay before we started eating grains, legumes, and some argue, dairy...before the onset of agriculture and definitely before the agricultural revolution.  If you want to learn more contact me about the Primal Blueprint Seminar locations or to request one in your area. The Water-Hydration Myth

water3-300x174

During a recent seminar someone asked me, "How much water do you drink each day?".  They gasped when I said I drink one glass a day, sometimes two.  I also mentioned that it depended on the day.  If I sweat, exercise, or feel thirsty, I drink more.  Also, that is 'water' ingestion...I drink other fluids in the form of green tea, coconut milk, and kombucha.  No, I don't get thirsty. No, my urine isn't totally clear. No, I'm not going to die of dehydration!  As a matter of fact, it is a MYTH that we all need 6-8 glasses of water per day. That got me wondering, where did this myth come from?  To me it makes perfect sense to drink when I'm thirsty and that our ancestors survived just fine (they were actually stronger, healthier, taller, and had less cavities...but that's another post), without guzzling gallons of water. I discovered that this is another one of those 'flawed conventional wisdom"  concepts that gets construed as truth by the sheeples (you know, those people that just follow the crowd and don't bother to think on their own). After much digging, all I could come up with, to even remotely support this theory, is that the water myth was first mentioned by Dr. Fredrick Stare, founder of Harvard's Department of Nutrition. He wrote Nutrition For Good Health in 1974 in which he said: "How much water each day? .. for the average adult, somewhere around 6 to 8 glasses per 24 hours".  But as I read further I found he clarified this statement with, … [Read more...]

Is Your Desk Making You Fatsickandnearlydead?

How many hours each day do you sit?  Now, I don't like being the bearer of bad news, but you may want to stand up while you read this.   Did you know that sitting all day can literally kill you! In a recent study it was found that women who sit 6 hours a day were 37% more likely to die, and men 17%, during the course of the study.  It has also been linked to dramatic increases in colon cancer, type II diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and depression.  It's not just the ergonomics of it, it is also the metabolic and systemic damage that occurs because of the slothfulness of sitting.  It all boils down to, 'If you don't use it you lose it'.  So why not just head out and do a little exercise to counter the effects of sitting?  Well, according to some sources it doesn't do any good!  Apparently, sitting all day is so bad for you that the bad effects can not be undone by exercising!  I don't necessarily believe that all is lost if you have no choice but to be chained to a chair all day.  There are actually some very effective ways you can counter the side effects of long dates on your derriere.  Here is a post by Mark Sisson that gives some great ideas on ways to combat the side effects of sitting. Another solution to the problem of sitting all day is to stand while you work.  Of course, standing all day comes with it's own set of problems.  There are desks on the market that can go from standing to seated within seconds, or if you have the room you can … [Read more...]

Feeding Kids Disconnected Food

baby with logos

As most of you know, I have four children. I am also a Health Coach, Personal  Trainer, and Nutritionist.  You may think my kids eat everything healthy, organic, unprocessed, home cooked, and I never feed them junk food. Truth is, feeding my kids REAL food is a daily battle.  When I explain how important it is for them to eat healthy, my fifteen year old rolls her eyes and sarcastically quips, "Okay Health Coach Penny".  My thirteen year old will grab doughnuts or cupcakes at sleepovers...one time she overindulged and learned a very good lesson about the effects of junk food, as she spent the evening regurgitating her sugar fest. I'm not alone in this fight...a lot of my friends, that are parents, struggle with this same issue: how do we teach our kids good eating habits when they are bombarded daily with opposing forces?  How can we teach our kids that they need to eat REAL food?   Food that is connected to the earth. What's a parent to do?  I definitely don't want to leave it up to the government or the advertising executives! I believe we need to start educating our children about healthy food at home. We can control what food comes into our homes, we can prepare more meals at home, and we can try educating our kids at every opportunity.  The mindset of a lot of Americans is, "Why make something that we can buy?".  This is producing a country that has become dependent on processed food, and that food has created a health crisis that is now affecting our … [Read more...]

How To Change for REAL!

Change:Action

Yes.  It's that time of year.  Time to reflect on the past year and move forward with new goals into the New Year.  How did you do on your list of resolutions from last year? Can you even remember what they were?  Do you find yourself breaking your resolutions year after year? Are you ready to make those goals stick this time around? Are you ready for REAL change?  Then it may be time to approach your resolutions from a new angle.  As Einstein so eloquently put it, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Real change is a step by step process.  It may come with a few setbacks, but those setbacks can be turned into growing and learning tools.  You can learn from mistakes and move forward if you don't throw in the towel and give up. Just because you drop your phone doesn't mean you have to jump on it and smash it to pieces. Just pick it up , figure out why it happened, make some adjustments, and move on.  Sounds easy, huh? It's not.  Change is often difficult.  Fact is, successful changers have failed many times, but what they all have in common is that they didn't quit.  It is time to dust off those past failed resolutions and prepare to finally turn them into real lasting change. Below are some key steps to get you started on the right foot this year.  Using these powerful points will help guide you in the process of real change.  Remember this process is not linear, change usually occurs in a circle. … [Read more...]

Become a Fat Burning Machine!

fat-burner

Oh yeah...I bet that title got your attention.  Everyone wants to know how to rev up their metabolism and access that seemingly endless supply of bodyfat, turning those love handles and saddlebags into fuel.  So how do you get that big blob of fat to turn into big logs of fuel?  Isn't that what bodyfat is designed for anyway...to be our body's alternative fuel source when it runs out of glucose and glycogen (instant and stored carbohydrates), right?  So why is it so hard to burn off that bodyfat and melt away the pounds?  Could it be you are taking in too many calories so your body just doesn't need to pull from it's fat stores, or could it be you aren't exercising enough to burn it off. This is the "calories in vs calories out" theory. Simply eat less and do more and you'll drop the pounds. That theory works. It works pretty well for those of you out there who are willing to go hungry and become exercise fanatics (which makes you even hungrier). Starve yourself and become an exercise anorexic (known as Hypergymnasia or Anorexica Athletica), and you will lose weight! So how long do you think that will last? How long will it be before you give in to your hunger pangs?  What happens when you get an overuse injury? How long until you become a part of the over 90% that gain all the weight back...plus more? Wouldn't it be nice if you could lose weight without counting calories, or have to "burn off" everything you put in your mouth with exercise?  What if there was a … [Read more...]

Confused About Diet? Use Common Sense!

SONY DSC

“A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.” ― Thomas Paine, Common Sense If you are confused about what to eat...join the crowd!  There is more conflicting nutrition information than there are shades of gray.  I say, take a step back. Back to our ancestors. What worked for tens of thousands of years worked better than what we have been eating the past 60 years, the SAD, Standard American Diet. For the first time in history our children are predicted to have a shorter life span than their parents. Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are all at an all time high. If you simply use common sense it will tell you that the low fat, processed, sugary food we eat is killing us slowly. It seems we can't trust the government's 'Food Pyramid', or new 'Food Plate', to tell us what is healthy.  They have an agenda that is shrouded in political shakanery.  It seems we can't trust most Medical Doctors either.  They have maybe one nutrition class and seem too busy to do anything but prescribe the drugs that have been marketed to them.  How about a Registered Dietician? They are regurgitating the information that has been passed down to them through the years, but nutrition science research is advancing at bullet-train speed, while the courses taught in school are still at the train … [Read more...]

The Power of Breath

meditationbreathe

"When we are born the first action we take on this earth is to inhale, and when we die, the last action we take is to exhale.  Life, from beginning to end, is one immense breath." Dennis Lewis Breathing provides energy and healing to our body. There is an abundance of research that shows how powerful breathing is to healing and improving the quality of our health. Unfortunately, few of us breath fully and experience full health. Breathing actually cleanses the body. Before you try to detox your body with a disgusting cleansing drink or a strict detox diet, you may want to consider simply taking a deep breath.  About 70% of the toxins in our body are removed through the lungs during exhalation, the other 30% are excreted in urine, feces, and skin. This means that when we exercise, feeling the heart pound the and the sweat start to flow,  we are detoxing our body on a deep cellular level.  I think this is why a lot of people who begin an exercise program may feel nauseous during the first few workouts. The toxins that have built up, due to inactivity and shallow breathing, are getting released, and expelled, with every breath. Many of my beginner clients have no 'somatic awareness'.  They are out of tune with their body and especially their breathing. Therefore, the first instruction I give a new client, before they begin exercising, is "BREATHE!".  I don't care when they inhale or exhale, no need to bog them down with details in the beginning, but I do warn … [Read more...]

In Search of REAL Food

online-shopping-cartoon

"We come unbidden into this life, and if we are lucky we find a purpose beyond starvation...which, lest we forget, is the common lot"--Abraham Verghese in Cutting For Stone It is difficult to imagine starvation as a worldwide problem when food is literally at our fingertips in America.  We are lucky to have the opportunity to be so picky as to choose where and what we eat, much less have difficulty in finding REAL food among the myriad of available sources.  Since the advent of the 'supermarket' in 1946 (yes, supermarkets are a mid-20th century phenomenon), we have separated ourselves from where and how food is actually grown...in the earth, and from animals that eat food naturally occurring from the earth.  Humans are genetically engineered to eat REAL food, not contortionist franken-foods such as those found in boxes, bags, big chain supermarkets, and drive-thru's. It only takes a quick glance around to see the devastating health effects of fake food. The only choice, as I see it, is to get back to eating, as close as possible, to the way our ancestors ate...REAL food.  The way we consumed food before factory farming, genetically modified seeds, deconstructed fats, chemical laden produce, and caged feed-lot animals.  The only way to move forward is to look backward...to our ancestors, but this isn't the direction we are heading.  Check out this interactive supermarket in a subway in Seoul, Korea where billions of people have access to loading up their virtual … [Read more...]
