Does Organic Really Matter?

photo(12)

Just the other day I had a conversation with my 81 year old father who said he hasn't been to a doctor in 30 years, and he has eaten regular 'non-organic' food all his life. He said, "All of this talk about eating organic and spending the extra money to get pesticide free food, is it something to worry about or is it just a bunch of paranoid new age hippies making a big deal about nothing? Surely the government wouldn't allow something in our food system that is toxic. Plus, I wash my fruits and vegetables anyway. What's the big deal?  I've lived a long and healthy life without it."  Let's just say the produce we eat now ain't the same produce that our parents ate. In the 21st century … [Read more...]

Are you interested in making a difference in the health of your community? It can be as easy as showing them a movie. That is all I did, and the dominoes are tumbling. Local health organizations, school systems, corporations and inspired citizens have contacted me about how they, too, can be a part of the change. Click here to find out how you can host a showing of the movie "Fed Up" by Katie Couric. If you are interested in reading the article about my local movie screening check it out here. Are You A Health ‘Free Thinker’

photo(10)

30 years ago the federal government decided, for the first time in its history, to design 'Dietary Guidelines'. Now here we are in the midst of an obesity, diabetes, and pill popping epidemic. Blindly following conventional wisdom, and not thinking for yourself, may cause more harm than good. Here are some reminders that may help you follow your own path when it comes to making sense of what is right and wrong for your health. 1. Change your mind as often as the facts change. 2. Ignore people who refuse to change their minds when the facts change. 3. Read more books and fewer articles. 4. Read more history and fewer conventional forecasts. 5. You have no obligation to have … [Read more...]

My Interview With a Hunter-Gatherer

photo(4)

There I was, sitting down for dinner after my first afternoon tracking animals in the Kwara Camp of Botswana, Africa. The thick aroma of what smelled like a mixture of wild animals, along with dung and an unfamiliar earthiness, made me realize I was in a macrocosm of life far removed from the sterile man-made environment I had traveled from 24 hours prior.   I couldn't help but wonder if there might be some trace of an olfactory memory encoded in my genes of this land I had left behind hundreds of thousands of years ago. I closed my eyes, inhaled the air deep into my lungs, searching for any remembrance of my past.  Nothing.  All I felt was  hunger after a long bumpy ride through the … [Read more...]

The Wild Life of Our Gut

Screen shot 2014-04-03 at 5.23.48 PM

Did you know that our insides are really our outsides? That's right. From our pie hole all the way to our poop shoot, as food enters and exits the body, it doesn't actually go inside our body until it is absorbed through the walls of the gastrointestinal tract (all those tubes our food travels through between our mouth and our anus).  The entire GI tract can be viewed as a food translator.  Food enters one end, gets rearranged and converted into various molecules, then the excrement is defecated. Lovely. What I find truly fascinating, and utterly mind blowing, is that we are swimming in bacteria, germs, and microbes, 'inside' our gut.  So much so that we are actually only 10% human.  … [Read more...]

Crossfit. The Good The Bad and The Ugly

crossfit guy

As some of you may know I have criticized crossfit in the past. From the outside looking in it looks unsafe.  The powerlifting/gymnastics moves that I have seen pictures of look like the people are going to snap a shoulder, knee, or back.  The gory photos of shins split wide open and barbells slamming people in the head are enough to scare off the most brave at heart.  I envisioned ego centered competitors swinging around enormous amounts of weight with no regard to form or safety. We have all seen the pictures like this one, and the one below, where it looks like stupid people doing stupid things. It is just a fad anyway, right? Wait, wait, no. It is a CULT! So when my … [Read more...]

Seven Habits Of Highly Unsuccessful Dieters

photo-19

We have all seen it and most of us have been there. Another diet FAIL. So what makes this time different?  What have you been doing wrong in the past that you are going to change this time? Analyzing what has been unsuccessful is a good place to start. During my 30+ years of counseling clients I have come to the conclusion that there are seven habits that guarantee 'un-success'. Before you read any further, I would like to point out, that being strong-armed into going on a diet NEVER works.   You have got to decide for yourself  if, when, and how, you are going to begin. Dieting is a tremendous undertaking and you better have your guns loaded! When you make that decision to … [Read more...]

Strive To Non-Strive

photo-3

Warning: Today's post is all about me.  According to the wise men of the world I have a problem. I need to go into rehab. I admit it. I STRIVE. Asking me to stop striving is like asking me to stop breathing. It is something I continually wrestle with. The picture you see here is on my dashboard.  It has been there for years.  I am continually 'striving' to work on all these areas, but when I get to the non-striving part I hit a brick wall. I have a feeling I have been like this all my life because I remember my Dad saying, "Penny, you need to lie in bed and stare at the ceiling once in a while." We are told that we need to continue to grow, change, achieve, better ourselves. Just Do It. … [Read more...]

Why I Drink Raw Milk

photo 4-3

This past week the farm where I own cow shares, and supplies my family with milk, was raided by the government.  Apparently 3 children were hospitalized with E.coli infection and my farm was a suspect. Of course the media jumped on the band wagon to spread this news.  Now the test results have been revealed and they show no E.coli in McBee's milk. But this news must not be scandalous enough to report, because all the farm is left with is the scar of bad press. If you are not familiar with "raw" milk it is simply milk straight from the cow that hasn't been pasteurized or homogenized. It is REAL milk. Because of this 'scandal' I have been getting bombarded with questions about why I choose … [Read more...]
