Are you interested in making a difference in the health of your community? It can be as easy as showing them a movie. That is all I did, and the dominoes are tumbling. Local health organizations, school systems, corporations and inspired citizens have contacted me about how they, too, can be a part of the change. Click here to find out how you can host a showing of the movie "Fed Up" by Katie Couric. If you are interested in reading the article about my local movie screening check it out here. Are You A Health ‘Free Thinker’

photo(10)

30 years ago the federal government decided, for the first time in its history, to design 'Dietary Guidelines'. Now here we are in the midst of an obesity, diabetes, and pill popping epidemic. Blindly following conventional wisdom, and not thinking for yourself, may cause more harm than good. Here are some reminders that may help you follow your own path when it comes to making sense of what is right and wrong for your health. 1. Change your mind as often as the facts change. 2. Ignore people who refuse to change their minds when the facts change. 3. Read more books and fewer articles. 4. Read more history and fewer conventional forecasts. 5. You have no obligation to have … [Read more...]

My Interview With a Hunter-Gatherer

photo(4)

There I was, sitting down for dinner after my first afternoon tracking animals in the Kwara Camp of Botswana, Africa. The thick aroma of what smelled like a mixture of wild animals, along with dung and an unfamiliar earthiness, made me realize I was in a macrocosm of life far removed from the sterile man-made environment I had traveled from 24 hours prior.   I couldn't help but wonder if there might be some trace of an olfactory memory encoded in my genes of this land I had left behind hundreds of thousands of years ago. I closed my eyes, inhaled the air deep into my lungs, searching for any remembrance of my past.  Nothing.  All I felt was  hunger after a long bumpy ride through the … [Read more...]

Seven Habits Of Highly Unsuccessful Dieters

photo-19

We have all seen it and most of us have been there. Another diet FAIL. So what makes this time different?  What have you been doing wrong in the past that you are going to change this time? Analyzing what has been unsuccessful is a good place to start. During my 30+ years of counseling clients I have come to the conclusion that there are seven habits that guarantee 'un-success'. Before you read any further, I would like to point out, that being strong-armed into going on a diet NEVER works.   You have got to decide for yourself  if, when, and how, you are going to begin. Dieting is a tremendous undertaking and you better have your guns loaded! When you make that decision to … [Read more...]

Strive To Non-Strive

photo-3

Warning: Today's post is all about me.  According to the wise men of the world I have a problem. I need to go into rehab. I admit it. I STRIVE. Asking me to stop striving is like asking me to stop breathing. It is something I continually wrestle with. The picture you see here is on my dashboard.  It has been there for years.  I am continually 'striving' to work on all these areas, but when I get to the non-striving part I hit a brick wall. I have a feeling I have been like this all my life because I remember my Dad saying, "Penny, you need to lie in bed and stare at the ceiling once in a while." We are told that we need to continue to grow, change, achieve, better ourselves. Just Do It. … [Read more...]

Why I Drink Raw Milk

photo 4-3

This past week the farm where I own cow shares, and supplies my family with milk, was raided by the government.  Apparently 3 children were hospitalized with E.coli infection and my farm was a suspect. Of course the media jumped on the band wagon to spread this news.  Now the test results have been revealed and they show no E.coli in McBee's milk. But this news must not be scandalous enough to report, because all the farm is left with is the scar of bad press. If you are not familiar with "raw" milk it is simply milk straight from the cow that hasn't been pasteurized or homogenized. It is REAL milk. Because of this 'scandal' I have been getting bombarded with questions about why I choose … [Read more...]

How To Party Like An Animal and Survive

photo 4

The gang is all getting together tonight to party.  They are so excited, but you have committed to eating clean and lean.  You really want to go out with your friends, but how in the world are you going to maneuver the maze of the typical party fare?  From the moment you enter the door someone is handing you a glass of some sugar laden social lubricant. As you stealthily scan the table of dynamite finger foods, searching for something that won't blow you up, you wonder how you can survive the mine field of assorted goodies.  You have to eat something or you may insult the host. You have to imbibe in a few drinks.  I mean, really, who wants to be the party-pooper!  How do you arm … [Read more...]

Fitness Is A Balancing Act

photo 2

http://youtu.be/nNHePOZb7sY Is balance a sign of good fitness or is it a matter of practice makes perfect?    The fact is, balance is not necessarily a reflection of fitness.  Sure, it helps to have the muscle strength and eye-hand coordination that develops with exercise, but when it comes to balance, if you don't use it you lose it.  We have an incredible ability to balance built into an equilibrium monitoring system in our inner ear, but the effectiveness of that system can deteriorate with disuse. Why do older folks have more problems with maintaining balance?  Is it loss of a center of gravity, nervous system control, inner ear problem, diminishing eye sight, or simply if … [Read more...]

MovNat: REAL Fitness

movnat certified

I recently took a survey for ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), the most highly respected personal training certification in the world.  It was to determine the fitness trends of the future, what are the fads, and what is here to stay. Of course, it mentioned Crossfit and Zumba, plus some really unusual trends such as Hula-Hoop and Prancercise. I was shocked to see that they missed the oldest form of exercise that is making a roaring comeback: MovNat. Moving Naturally. If you haven't heard of MovNat, it's only because you have forgotten. I'm here to refresh your memory. The man on the cover of this magazine is the founder, Erwan Le Corre, here is an excellent interview … [Read more...]
