Are You A Health ‘Free Thinker’

photo(10)

30 years ago the federal government decided, for the first time in its history, to design 'Dietary Guidelines'. Now here we are in the midst of an obesity, diabetes, and pill popping epidemic. Blindly following conventional wisdom, and not thinking for yourself, may cause more harm than good. Here are some reminders that may help you follow your own path when it comes to making sense of what is right and wrong for your health. 1. Change your mind as often as the facts change. 2. Ignore people who refuse to change their minds when the facts change. 3. Read more books and fewer articles. 4. Read more history and fewer conventional forecasts. 5. You have no obligation to have … [Read more...]

Crossfit. The Good The Bad and The Ugly

crossfit guy

As some of you may know I have criticized crossfit in the past. From the outside looking in it looks unsafe.  The powerlifting/gymnastics moves that I have seen pictures of look like the people are going to snap a shoulder, knee, or back.  The gory photos of shins split wide open and barbells slamming people in the head are enough to scare off the most brave at heart.  I envisioned ego centered competitors swinging around enormous amounts of weight with no regard to form or safety. We have all seen the pictures like this one, and the one below, where it looks like stupid people doing stupid things. It is just a fad anyway, right? Wait, wait, no. It is a CULT! So when my … [Read more...]

Why do older folks have more problems with maintaining balance?  Is it loss of a center of gravity, nervous system control, inner ear problem, diminishing eye sight, or simply if … [Read more...]

My Recipe For A Lean, Fit, Happy, Healthy Life

health-happy

I recently received an email from a client asking what I recommend most for staying lean and fit. I posted the answer on my Facebook page 'Health Coach Penny', and got more 'likes' than any other post, so I thought you might like to take a look at my recipe for staying lean, fit, happy and healthy. 1) It starts with sleep. I need at least 8 hours, yours may be a little less or a little more.  Read to learn why sleep is so important.  2) Eat veggies, fish, meat, fowl, eggs, nuts and seeds, and a little fruit (mostly berries). That's it. You can't exercise off the weight. If you believe in the 'burn off the calories with exercise to lose weight' theory then you will have to run 35 miles … [Read more...]

How To Change for REAL!

Change:Action

Yes.  It's that time of year.  Time to reflect on the past year and move forward with new goals into the New Year.  How did you do on your list of resolutions from last year? Can you even remember what they were?  Do you find yourself breaking your resolutions year after year? Are you ready to make those goals stick this time around? Are you ready for REAL change?  Then it may be time to approach your resolutions from a new angle.  As Einstein so eloquently put it, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Real change is a step by step process.  It may come with a few setbacks, but those setbacks can be turned into growing and … [Read more...]
